Max Verstappen & Lewis Hamilton: Who Wins the Watch War?

There hasn’t been this excitement in an F1 season for decades! As a terrible driver and less than passionate motorsport follower, I will be fixated on the race this weekend! The Dutchman Max Verstappen is at the top of the standings with 9 wins and 17 podiums, Hamilton is in second, with 8 wins and 16 podiums – both join on 369.5. Despite a controversial battle of attrition between the pair at the inaugural Saudi Arabian GP last weekend, which involved several red flags and safety car incidents

The final race of this extraordinary 2021 Formula One world championship is in Abu Dhabi this weekend. And while we could dive into the nitty gritty of the year past, the ups and downs, we really felt this was a battle off the track, between two men who love watches! So here is a short run down on what they have both been seen sporting over the years – and we welcome comments and who you think strikes the knockout blow!

Now we know both men have obligations to adhere to through race team sponsorship. Max and Red Bull are with Tag Heuer and Lewis and Mercedes with IWC. Not only are their choices for which models from those brands the wear interesting – but there are a few wildcard spots which are a little off field – so buckle up!

Max is often spotted wearing a Tag Monaco (which Steve Macqueen made famous of course) in titanium with silver dial and dark sub dials. More interestingly is that he has also been spotted wearing an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore with ceramic bezel, dark grey dial and off-white sub dials. At 44mm it’s a statement piece no doubt.

You get the impression that while Lewis had to adopt IWC, he truly loves the Big Pilot format. Not only is it on his glove when he drives, but he has produced one “Lewis” edition in partnership with IWC in red and black with ceramic case and gold crown. As well as an all-black watch produced just for him to support the Black Lives Matter movement. That said, he has also been spotted wearing Rolex, specifically a solid rose gold Daytona while off duty. We have all agreed on a winner here at Xupes – but what do you think?
