It is not unusual for celebrities to own a luxury timepiece. Often you will find that in fact, most celebrities are actually watch aficionados, some with brand ambassador status, some just collectors or avid investors. The latter, often has a knock on effect on the value of the collected timepiece, especially when the piece comes with evident provenance. Dependent on the celebrity and their status, the watch for sale often secures record values at auction.
We are excited to announce the addition of a rare Patek Philippe 175th Anniversary Watch, to our collection. This extraordinary piece was previously owned by three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Eric Clapton.
The rare, multi-scale chronograph 5975R-001 timepiece was originally purchased directly by the music legend. The 175th Anniversary piece was an ‘invitation only’ item, enhancing its rarity and exclusivity. Made to celebrate Patek Philippe's 175th Anniversary (1839-2014), the 5975R was made in very limited numbers and offered to very few elite Patek Philippe customers as a gesture to own part of the brands history.
The Patek Philippe features a multiscale consisting of three different scales: a tachymeter, telemeter and a pulsimeter. Additionally, it harnesses three concentric chronograph scales that are extremely similar to the ones used by Second World War pilots. The classic brown leather strap complements the 18 carat rose gold case and this unique timepiece is a spectacular addition to any watch connoisseur’s collection. The watch comes complete with its original box and papers including the purchase certificate signed by Eric Clapton.
Alongside being one of the most influential guitarists in the world, Eric is also a renowned watch connoisseur and his collection has been well documented. In 2012, one of his rare Patek Philippe timepieces was sold for a record breaking £2.3 million at Christies. His collection mainly consists of Rolex and Patek Philippe including both vintage and modern pieces. Despite the watches from his personal collection coming up at auction on occasion, this occurs very infrequently making them often quite notable and news-worthy stories.
“It is an honor to be selling such a hard-to-find and exclusive Patek Philippe, and with such provenance having originally belonged to Eric Clapton. We are hoping that the watch will go to a new home, to maybe a fan or collector, and that its story will be continued, being passed down through the generations. Eric’s watches have historically raised excitement amongst Eric Clapton aficionados, sometimes pushing prices to more than 40% over RRP.”
