Known for exquisite designs and a history that sets them apart from the rest in fine jewellery, Mikimoto is often called the “King of Pearls”. It’s not only the outstanding story that makes these pieces so special – with every design, Mikimoto captures various influences ranging from ancient Greek and classic Japanese art to the modern, busy streets of New York.
THE START OF A NEW JEWELLERY ERA
Mikimoto’s fascinating journey starts with their namesake and founder, Kokichi Mikimoto, who disrupted and revolutionised the pearl industry on the quest to create high-quality jewellery. While the Japanese pearl industry disregarded professionalism and quality in order to produce and sell more, Kokichi saw the underlying issues of the process and strived to create a new system.
In 1893, his experiments became reality with discovering the uniqueness of cultivated pearls… and today, decades later, his passion lives through a legacy of the finest Akoya pearl pieces. This achievement not only made Mikimoto one of the most loved fine jewellery houses, but also offered a new standard and perfection for the Japanese pearl industry.
THE INSPIRATION OF MIKIMOTO
From the very beginning, Mikimoto has effortlessly combined a classic Japanese aesthetic with Western craftsmanship. With their jewellers trained in Europe and the US, Mikimoto found a new way of metalwork and reinterpretation of their traditional style to create a distinctive voice for the brand. Alongside their obvious beauty, these high-quality pieces also hold the innovation of Mikimoto with newly designed clasps, versatile shapes and multi-layered strands. The luxurious pearls have their own signature style with different shapes such as button, oval and teardrop, with shades ranging from soft pink and cream to grey, pale green and black. Every piece’s mission is to offer a choice for the modern woman, while showcasing pearls’ timeless romanticism and elegance. This blend of different influences creates unique pieces for the collection, designed to be worn for formal events and those special occasions that require distinctive accessories.

The Earring Collection:
Designed in the early 2000’s, these 18k yellow gold Pearl and Diamond Earrings feature an architectural silhouette utilising a clever S shape to give a sense of movement and fluidity to the design. This swirled shape is paved in chocolate diamonds (loved by celebrities such as Rihanna) adding a warmth to the earrings and complimenting the unusual gold Akoya pearls which sit perfectly at the bottom tip of the S creating a pretty drop effect.
… a sleek bun and white jumpsuit for important family gatherings such as Christenings or Seasonal parties.
A very special choice showcasing Mikimoto’s elegant and minimal side, these drop earrings focus on the perfectly round, white Akoya pearls. The earrings are crafted in 18k white gold and paved with brilliant cut diamonds adding just the right touch of glamour and opulence.
…Old Hollywood Glam waves and a high neck dress to accentuate the earrings.
The Ring Collection:
This ring has a classic appeal, taking the original cocktail ring silhouette to a whole new level. The seven Akoya pearls of the ring are embedded with brilliant cut pavé diamonds, and surrounded by 18k white gold. Mikimoto has added a curved shape to the design which emphasises the depth of the pearls and creating a bubbled effect across three layers. On the larger side, this ring really stands out from not only its size but its distinct style.
… a jewel-toned satin midi dress and metallic clutch for fashion events and birthday parties.
Featuring a modern, sleek shape, this Akoya pearl and Tourmaline ring is a fabulous ring to layer with dainty, pure gold midi rings. In an almost serpent like shape wrapping its way around your finger, the cabochon Tourmaline’s sit perfectly flush whilst the pearls are proudly set at the joining heads showcasing their beauty to the maximum.
…a velvet burgundy top and a midi skirt for a classy look.
One of the most luxurious pieces in the collection, this Akoya Pearl & Diamond cocktail ring features a mix of 18k yellow and white gold with a central set large white Akoya pearl and brilliant cut diamond paving. The yellow gold is intricately set with a ribbed design which wraps delicately around the centre of the ring and clasping the central pearl gently on each side. The design of this piece is perfectly crafted to accentuate the beauty of such a prominent large pearl whilst adding to the grandeur and magnificence.
