The team at Year Zero London will customise almost anything. They have hand painted their designs on many of our favourite brands including Hermès, Fendi, Goyard and Chanel. Created three years ago by Louise Michielsens, Rocky Mazzilli and Tatum Mazzilli, Year Zero London pushes the boundaries and creates pieces synonymous with pop culture and the arts. Their instantly recognisable works are a favourite with names including Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Lana Del Rey, Jason Derulo, Cara Delevingne, Rita Ora, and Pharrell.
At Xupes, we chose a selection of our Louis Vuitton handbags as a focus of a collaboration with Year Zero London. “The designs created by Year Zero London are so fun. I just loved the contrast of the bright coloured, ‘out-there’ designs on something like the classic monogram of Louis Vuitton,” explains Xupes Head of Handbags and Accessories, Reece Morgan.
Working closely with Year Zero founder Rocky, Reece created the first Xupes collection, titled Cash Money. “Rocky and I decided to design the collection around popular culture – we found the almost vulgar money-focussed designs to work really well,” explains Reece. “After we designed the first collection, we slowly realised all our favourite ideas were always focussed around cash and all things expensive.”
Reece and Rocky went on to design three different editions of the Cash Money designs on bags including Almas, Keepall Bandoulieres and Toiletry Pouches. The first three designs all featured on vintage Louis Vuitton Alma PMs. Reece explains: “This initial batch were definitely my favourite to create and they really set the tone for the whole collection.”
Reece adds: “The collection was exceedingly popular, more-so than Rocky and I had ever thought it might be.” One of the initial Cash Money bespoke Louis Vuitton Almas can even be seen on Kylie Jenner’s Instagram. The beauty mogul and new mother shared a glimpse of the items resting on the shelves of her heavenly handbag closet. Nestled in her mirrored walk-in closet is the Xupes x Year Zero London, Momager Alma. “The Momager piece was really fun to conceptualise. Again, drawing into the social phenomenon of apps like Snapchat we wanted to showcase something fun and different on an iconic pre-loved handbag from Louis Vuitton,” explains Reece.
More recently, Kylie can be seen sharing her favourite Louis Vuitton collaboration pieces via her app. Kylie confirmed that the bag was in-fact gifted to her by Kris Jenner at Christmas: “She knows how obsessed I am with her. So, she got this really cool piece,” reveals Kylie in the clip.
Whilst the Alma is a bespoke piece now residing in Calabasas, there is still an assortment of pieces from the Cash Money collection available to purchase, exclusively at Xupes. From a selection of pre-owned Louis Vuitton Bandoulieres, embellished with emoji-style icons including diamonds, private jets and pink doughnuts; to toiletry pouches with some of our favourite cartoon characters painted among the monogram, with phrases including “Ca$h me outside” and “Get this money” branding the bags.
The full collection can be shopped online here. Reece explains: “I am so pleased to see the designs created by Xupes and Year Zero London are being well received and I can’t wait to explore some new concepts for the next collection… watch this space.”
