When considering the purchase of a pre-owned sports watch, many instantly think of timepieces by Rolex. The brand has a longstanding affiliation with the sporting world. It was in back in 1926 that the brand created their first Waterproof watch, aptly named the Oyster, and in 1927 that model proved its worth and crossed the Channel, worn by Mercedes Gleitze. The young English swimmers time in the Channel lasted over 10 hours and the watch remained in perfect working order throughout.
Rolex have built a brand by creating watches that step up to the mark and past the finish line. From the Oyster to the Daytona, pre-owned Rolex models can offer an incredible return on investment. However, we often forget that other brands are well and truly contending for gold and often achieve just that.
The likes of Omega, IWC, Audemars Piguet and Breitling all offer some fantastic sports models that are well and truly challenging our first thought of Rolex as the go-to sporting brand. I have picked out a selection available in our collection online at Xupes now. Discover more about some of these below…
The pre-owned Breitling Galactic II Chronograph is an excellent timepiece containing the eta 7750 movement, making this very reliable. The bright blue dial stands out for a casual look with an emphasis created by the contrast between the matte/polished dial.
The Omega Planet Ocean GMT gives a nice burst of colour between the black and orange. This a great watch to put on and leave on with the rubber strap giving extra resilience for daily wear. The in-house 8605 co-axial calibre by Omega is very clever in having a co-axial escapement meaning less wear to the movement and bigger servicing intervals. This is a very easy watch to get on with, especially for someone who is just getting into the luxury market of watches.
The IWC Pilot's Perpetual Calendar is an exceptionally clever watch. A perpetual calendar is the highlight of watchmaking and often takes watchmakers generations to undertake such a task in creating such a piece. This watch is mechanically engineered to understand when the days of the month, year and even leap years change. As long as the watch is kept wound, you will not need to change the date for around 100 years!
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph 41mm is truly the icing on the cake for me in terms of pre-owned sports watches. The bracelet is one of my all-time favourites; the finishing of the angular bezel designed by Gerald Genta matched with the solidly linked bracelet gives an awe-inspiring impression for anybody who appreciates luxury watches.
