Spotlight On: Pre-Owned Chanel Lego Boy Clutch

A look at a pre-owned 2014 Chanel Minaudière in black plexiglass with pearl hardware and strap.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel “LEGO” Boy Clutch was the unlikely ‘It’ bag of 2014. It was first introduced in the Spring/Summer 2013 collection and while the anti-fashionistas couldn’t quite believe that what they deemed to be a large, plastic LEGO brick was priced at over £5,000, Kim Kardashian picked one up in green and her mother followed suit. By the time Rihanna had one in yellow and Rita Ora had bagged a red version, it had become an essential amongst the glitterati.

The bag is actually better known as a minaudière (literally: a small ornate case). The genre first hit the scene in 1930s, championed by brands such as Van Cleef & Arpels, when Paris was the international hotspot for artists, jazz musicians, writers and movie stars. It was intended more as a piece of jewellery than an evening bag, or as style guru Lloyd Boston put it in his 2010 book, The Style Checklist, “let your imagination take over your desire to have function. For tonight, there should be little utility, just fabulosity and fun!”

Lagerfeld has been playing with the minaudière a lot in recent seasons. His creations have included the “Hula-Hoop” handbag, the Perspex Casette, the Perfume Bottle clutch, the “Lait de Coco” bag that looks like a milk carton, or the 2015 must-have—the Movie-Camera clutch. He’s upping the anti in offbeat designs with a short shelf life and a wide appreciation amongst the fashion big league. The key attraction seems to be his willingness to take risks—he’s fashion-forward and the market follows his every move.

The minaudière is usually hand held, often rigid—metallic, rectangular, or, increasingly, plastic. It seems the plastic look, perhaps made from Plexiglas or Perspex is everything right now and can even sell at twice the price of Classic Chanel quilted lambskin. The minaudière typically has room for a handful of cosmetics, a wallet, and if you’re lucky, a phone.

We loved this pearl-studded version from 2014, which is glitzier and slightly more classic than the original LEGO. While it takes the LEGO shape it’s decked with pearls, a favourite of Coco Chanel, and its main colour is iridescent black. Inside it’s lined with Chanel lambskin leather and it has a zipped-compartment.
