Why Buy A Pre-Owned Hermès Birkin HAC in Epsom Leather?
by Reece Morgan | July 15, 2016
The Hermès Birkin is simply the IT Bag of all time. It's exclusive like no other and made with an obsessive emphasis on quality, which is why its prices range from as low as £7,500 to over £100,000, or even, in special case scenarios, £206,000. Despite the high price tag, they last for decades in immaculate condition, retain their value and perform well on the pre-owned market.
This 40 cm Birkin is the second largest that Hermès produces. In Epsom leather it’s meant to be used as an everyday bag because it’s durable, refined, and its classic styling will suit almost any looks (on the smarter end of the scale that is!).
Why choose Epsom Leather?
Epsom leather is an embossed calf leather, which means the subtle grain pattern is actually stamped on, making it very scratch resistant. It replaced Courchevel leather around the turn of the century. It was slightly less shiny, a touch lighter, and much more difficult to counterfeit. It became one of Hermès’ most popular and most financially accessible leathers due to its qualities as strong, durable leather that holds its shape excellently. It’s also very lightweight, lighter than Togo leather, and is easy to clean with a damp cloth.
Why buy a Birkin over other Hermès handbags?
It hit the handbag scene in 1984, three years after Jane Birkin famously sat next to then-Hermès chief Jean-Louis Dumas on a plane and complained to him about the lack of decent leather weekend bags on the market.
Hermès was already a big player in the handbag game, having already released the much-revered Hermès Kelly three decades previously. But the new Birkin, practical, and aesthetically well-balanced, sealed Hermès position as the number one challenger to Chanel.
With the Birkin came Hermès’ infamous waiting lists. While bags would take a long time to make, each one crafted individually by one artisan, their six-month to three-year wait time was most likely artificial, making the Birkin even more exclusive and unattainable.
This version, in excellent pre-owned condition, is currently in the Xupes Summer Sale listed at £5,999, which is an excellent value for a bag of such quality. Its value will likely only increase over the years. For more information, pictures and prices of this Pre-Owned Hermès Birkin in Epsom Leather, click here.
