THE OMEGA Seamaster LIMITED EDITION SAS

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean XL 45.5 mm model ref. 2200.50.00 is not only as cool as it is indestructible, but it was made exclusively for members of the SAS 22 regiment. Lucky enough to be amongst the few that got their hands on one—it’s estimated that only about 300 were made—we took a look at how it came to be associated with the SAS and what tweaks and symbols were added to represent arguably the most efficient special forces in the world.
Twice a year, a handful of fearless British soldiers volunteer to take part in the “Special Forces Aptitude Test”. On average, less than 10 per cent of these are likely to pass. The test is so extreme that in the summer of 2013 two troopers died from heat exhaustion whilst trying to keep pace in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. Now, considering the SAS is the top 1 per cent of that niche, a level of prowess attainable only by a very rare type of individual, association with this formidable group requires something out of the ordinary.
Many top watch manufacturers fight each other for the chance to be associated with the armed forces and their prestige. Omega know that being able put the SAS brand on your watch is something that very few competitors will ever achieve. In order to accomplish this they selected one of their finest models and made it exclusively available, at a very reasonable price, to SAS 22 regiment. The idea was that each watch would then be inscribed with a number and initials corresponding to the owner. They also added design features particular to the 22nd regiment.
The Seamaster is engraved on the caseback with the SAS winged dagger logo bearing the legendary motto, “He who dares”. It’s further engraved on the case side between the shoulders with the words, “Always a little further”, which is a line from a passage of a poem which the 22nd regiment is instructed to memorise during selection. The poem is called The Golden Journey to Samarkand, and the passage is The Pilgrim. The conversation goes, “But who are ye, in rags and rotten shoes, You dirty-bearded, blocking up the way?” the response is the first four lines from the 16-line passage:
“We are the Pilgrims, master;
we shall go always a little further:
it may be beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea,"
Creating a watch with the quality and style necessary to represent such a particular niche of society requires a similarly exceptional level of watchmaking expertise and reputation. Current Bond watch producers, Omega, are no strangers to this level of prestige.
The watch proved to be very popular and it’s estimated that up to 300 were sold. Omega added a repercussion clause to the initial purchase to attempt to deter those just looking to profit from the offer, anyone selling on the watch would not be allowed to purchase another one at any stage. Needless to say, the watches are highly sought-after and rarely pop-up at auction. The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean XL 45.5 mm model ref. 2200.50.00 in stainless steel is now an excellent investment opportunity.
We have since sold the watch, but be sure to get in touch as we are able to source watches of most descriptions. Click here for more details on the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean XL 45.5 mm model ref. 2200.50.00 in stainless steel.
