Offered here is a stunning example of the Rolex Pre-Serif Matte Dial Submariner reference 5513 manufactured circa 1971.
This example has the correct dial type for its 259---- serial number. These early matte dial ‘PRE-SERIF’ Submariners are highly sought after in Rolex vintage collecting.
The 5513 was introduced in 1962 and there was still a moderately revised model in the line-up until 1989 - making it one of the longest-running model references in the Rolex range.
Description Of A Pre-Serif Matte Dial.
The ‘PRE-SERIF’ matte dials were only in production for approximately 2 years from 1969 to 1971. They fall in the 2 million serial number range and are recognisable by the lack of serifs to the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock hour markers and the centre line of the E in Rolex that has an over-emphasized serif to the central line. (Typically, quirky detailing from Rolex).
The overall condition of this vintage Submariner is very good. The case has been detailed in the past, but still retains fairly symmetrical lugs and crown guards along with the brushed finish to the top edges and chamfers finely defined, the bezel ring has some minor dings and scratches along with its original thick font MKIII faded insert.
The matte dial has taken on a slightly faded appearance, with the tritium hour plot markers and hands showing a light pumpkin colour that provides a real vintage feel to this Submariner. It is also enhanced with the raised dome Plexi glass that is free of any scratches or marks.
The watch comes on its original pressed link Submariner bracelet reference 9315 dates stamped 2/72 that confirms production was February 1972 – along with 280 end links. The bracelet is showing typical wear and stretch for a vintage bracelet of this age.
