We are delighted to be offering this excellent, rare example of the Rolex Submariner 5512 with gloss, chapter ring, gilt/silver writing and two-line dial - manufactured circa 1960. Those are not the only extraordinary details of this beautiful watch - it also has meters first depth rating writing, single “SWISS” at 6 o’clock advising of the reduced radium on the hour plots and baton markers, hands along with pointed crown guards to the case.
The early Rolex 5512 two line, on a super gloss dial, chapter ring is one of the most collectable 5512s’ produced and looks unlike any other Submariner bearing that reference number.
There are several different types of 5512 Submariner dials, and they can also be divided into 2 main types, based on the type of luminescent material used on the markers and hands this being either radium or tritium.
It is also understood that for every six 5513s’ produced, there was only one 5512 manufactured making the whole of the 5512 line up rare in comparison to other models in the Submariner range.
Initially launched in 1959, the Rolex Submariner reference 5512 can be considered the first modern design for the Submariner, since it introduced crown guards and came in a 40mm diameter, replacing the 38mm diameter of the previous references. The 5512 went through a few minor changes during its circa 15-year production, especially after the 5513 was released in 1962. The difference between the two models was the chronometer certification of the 5512, which was eventually displayed on its dial, and this is the version that Steve McQueen famously wore.

The 5512 we have here is undoubtedly part of the early production as its dial only sports two lines above six o'clock, while mention of the chronometer certification would add another two lines on later models. The pointed crown guards are also an unmistakable sign of early production, also known as 2nd generation, since the first offered square guards.

The overall condition of this rare vintage Submariner is excellent. The case with its PCG (pointed crown guards) does not show any signs of over polishing or detailing, with all the lugs and PCG remaining strong and equal. The serial 577---- number and model 5512 numbers are clear between the lugs, along with the inside of the case back being correctly stamped 5512 and date stamped II 60 confirming the production date to be the second quarter of 1960. The watch had a full service by an accredited Rolex watch maker in August 2019 and is running very strongly. The movement still retains its original butterfly rotor, drive wheels and crown. The gloss dial is in very good condition showing a full mirror like gloss finish to the surface (with only a minor shadow near the hand pivot). The radium plot hour markers and hands have all aged consistently and glow nicely for a short period. The bezel and thick font insert are in very good condition, with no apparent dings or scratches.
The watch comes on its correct Rolex 7206 reference bracelet that is date stamped 2/68 indicating that it was most probably replaced later by Rolex. The bracelet is in excellent condition and showing only average stretch and wear for a vintage sports bracelet.
The watch comes as a complete set with its original box, chronograph certificate slip and open guarantee at your service booklet dated 28th July 1962.
