Our Opinion

Offered here is a superb example of the rare Rolex Day-Date with a blue Stella stepped dial - reference 1803 manufactured circa 1973.
The name came from a company called Stella, based in Châtelaine and Geneva, which supplied Rolex dial makers with the special lacquer and bright pigment used. The first person to discover and disclose this publicly was Dr. Helmut Crott, the industry veteran and eponymic auction house founder, who published this in his reference book.

It is believed that these dials were originally produced for a few markets including the Middle East and Asia but, found their way to other regions as well. The irony is that Stella models were not popular during the time Rolex produced them, back then clients wanted more conservative dials on a Day-Date like white, silver, and black whilst Stella models sat in dealers display cases or safes. In some instances, Stella dials were even replaced by conventional or other dials. Rolex allegedly destroyed batches of Stella dials as they were unpopular, one reason why they are so rare today.

The Day-Date range has historically been a template for Rolex to display unbound creativity. As a result, this piece with its blue Stella stepped dial, displays one of the most unusual dial configurations in the Day-Date range. Rolex went well beyond its usual bounds - experimenting with different dials and the Day-Date can also be found with other dial options, inclusive of wood, lacquer, fossil, marble and coral.
This example has the correct bue Stella stepped dial with chamfered display windows to the separate day and date apertures for its 352---- serial number range.
The overall condition of this 18k Day-Date is very good. The case appears to be have been lightly polished in the past, but still retains strong equal lugs along with the brushed finish to the top edges which remain very well defined. The 18k yellow gold fluted bezel has no dings or scratches and really compliments the overall appearance of this 36mm Day-Date. The blue Stella stepped dial is in stunning condition along with the respective displays in the rectangular day and date windows. The hour gold baton markers and matching hands are in beautiful condition and matching in colour, along with the Tritium inserts and hour plots. The Plexiglass is the correct ‘Top Hat’ style inclusive of the Cyclops date window for this model, it is also free of any detrimental scratches or marks.
The watch comes on the correct Rolex 18k gold President bracelet with flat clasp and gold end links. The bracelet is showing only light wear and minor stretch for a vintage watch and is accompanied by a Rolex service pouch.
