Explorer II Stainless Steel - 16550

Offered here is a superb example and full set of the Rolex Explorer II 16550 manufactured circa 1987.

Rolex Explorer models were watches designed and intended for adventurers. Whilst the Explorer I was marketed to mountain climbers, the Explorer II with its 24-hour graduated bezel and its large, luminescent 24-hour hand arrow, was intended for those spending extended time in dark environments, such as cave explorers known as spelunkers.

Launched in 1985, the Rolex Explorer II reference 16550 was the first Explorer II model to be fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. It was only in production for less than 5 years and has become a favourite amongst collectors of Rolex sport watches.

The 16550 Explorer II is a truly impressive Neo Vintage icon and this example has the correct dial for its 919---- serial number range.
The overall condition of this Explorer 16550 is good. The case has been lightly polished in the past, but retains very strong equal lugs and crown guards along with the brushed finish to the top edges and chamfers remaining very well defined. The stainless steel bezel with its 24 hour engraved markers has no major dings or scratches and enhances the overall appearance of this Explorer II. The black gloss dial is in beautiful condition with no apparent flaws along with the white gold surrounds and the tritium hour plot markers and hands that have taken on a beautiful rich brown patina and are all matching in colour. The sapphire glass is the correct flat type inclusive of the Cyclops date window for this model, it is also free of any detrimental scratches or marks.
The watch comes on a later Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet and 583 end links, this was most probably fitted when the watch was fully serviced by Rolex in 2014. The bracelet is showing only very light wear and minor stretch.
The watch comes as a complete set with its period correct inner and outer boxes, punched paper guarantee dated 28th November 1987, booklets, hang tags and booklet holder. Also included are 2 service papers, confirming the watch was serviced by Rolex in 2002 and 2014.
