This second hand Rolex watch has been fully inspected in house and is covered by the 24 months Xupes warranty – please note this does not include accidental damage or negligence. Water resistance is only guaranteed in line with manufacturer's warranty.
The Rolex Explorer was first launched in 1953 as an expedition/mountaineering watch offering extremely robust manufacturing standards and optimal legibility. In pre-launch trials the Explorer proved its credentials when it survived testing in the most inhospitable of surroundings when Sir Edmund Hillary wore one during his Himalayan adventures to the summit of Mount Everest.
Cased in stainless steel, this timepiece was originally purchased in July 1966 and is the ‘Super Precision’ variation (marked above the 6 o’clock position) and therefore houses Rolex’s 1530 calibre movement. Often referred to as the Explorer ref. 5500 due to its ‘Air King’ case, it is a timeless classic design with wonderful proportions. The 34mm case has minor signs of wear, unsurprising given that it was purchased the year England won its only football World Cup. The pin hole lugs have signs of slight over-polishing on the front and back, but the case condition overall is good as is the highly polished bezel. Rolex’s unique serial number is easily legible at the familiar position between the lower lugs.
The solid screw down case back has an intact seal and bears the stamp 1002, 11.65, and once opened reveals the 18000 BPH movement which is in exceptionally good order.
The bracelet is a solid link Oyster design (ref. 78350) and again is in good condition with minor scratching commensurate with age.
Beneath the acrylic crystal, the jet black dial has some restoration to the lume. The familiar Explorer 3, 6, 9 Arabic numerals, inverted triangle at 12 o’clock and remaining stick indices have been restored and present a patinated warm cream colour. A ‘Mercedes’ hour hand, minute hand, and lollipop second hand all appear to be service hands given their condition and quality of lume.
Simplistic and timeless in its design the Explorer remains a popular stalwart of the Rolex collection to this day. This vintage example comes with original box, manuals and guarantee and a 2 year Xupes warranty making a super acquisition for the sports watch collector looking for something beyond the mainstream.
