Geeking over Tachymetre bezels on a vintage steel sports chronograph watches probably won't make you feel very cool or attract the ladies in droves, but the Tachymetre bezel is most definitely one of the first things that catches the eye and tells the tale of a vintage Omega Speedmaster.
Alongside casebacks, bezels are the most scrutinised exterior feature of a Speedmaster. A well-kept piece such as this will show congruous marks from wear and tear with remaining black and silver detailing in legible condition. This bezel is known amongst collectors as a DN90 - dot next to the 90.
This is a reference 145.022-69 ST. These models were said to have been manufactured in 1970/71 despite the number -69 in the reference, this number sometimes denoting manufacture year in other similar references of the time. The late 60s were the roaring hay-days of the Speedmaster so you can be sure that this moon watch didn’t hang around on the shelf for long given its synonymy with the 1969 moon landings.
This model contains the manual wind calibre 861. The movement is in perfect running order. Hands and dial including the stepped inner bezel and stepped sub-dials are in beautiful condition showing faint signs of ageing to the black paint. Serif lume markers and minute track are clear and unrestored. The straight lugs and large 5mm x 3.5mm pushers are in good polished condition.
This caseback has the block capital engraved moon watch straight writing above and around the central Omega logo. As mentioned this caseback was introduced following the 1969 moon landings involving the Speedmaster on the wrists of some of the NASA astronauts and this caseback typography gives the model its “straight writing” nickname.
This dial features the painted Omega logo along with other model specific traits such as stick hands, painted hour indices and “Professional” signed dial.
