IWC was founded in Schaffhausen on the Swiss-German border in 1868 by American Engineer and Watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones. Renowned for highly practical and reliable timepieces IWC (in 1955) decided to make a watch to honour their heroes of the age – the engineers who pioneered advances in most noticeably the aviation and automobile industries. The ‘Ingenieur’ was designed to be robust and protected from shock and magnetic fields. First refreshed in ’67, it received a more radical overhaul in 1976 when IWC enlisted the legendary Gerald Genta to redesign the Ingenieur with a sportier case and strap. Famous for designing AP’s Royal Oak and Patek’s Nautilus, one can see very strong influences of both models flow through the Ingenieur.
Despite Genta’s notoriety, his Ingenieur SL (Steel Line) was not as commercially successful as IWC had hoped. By modern standards, the 40mm case is conformist however, at the time its size led to it being known as the ‘Jumbo’. The worldwide popularity of quartz watches was also a challenge, so much so that IWC introduced quartz to this collection. Xupes is pleased to offer a fine example of the 2nd iteration of the quartz pieces, Ref 3303 aka ‘Skinny Jumbo’ named so due to the shallower case depth. Powered by the highly accurate Calibre 2250 movement these were available from 1980 to 1985. It has a screw down bezel, with five distinctive recesses which were both ornamental and functional to facilitate unscrewing which gave each watch a slightly different look due to the bezel’s alignment.
Underneath the sapphire glass, the silver rhodium plated dial gives the watch a subtle continuity and offers a wonderful backdrop to the features on display. A boldly framed date window sits at the 3 o’clock position, while applied baton hour markers and sword-shaped hands (with a tritium lume) give a sense of elegance to an otherwise masculine timepiece.
