A grand complication from Patek Philippe is a pinnacle piece of any person’s collection, even if the collector focuses only on the lofty heights of minute repeaters and perpetual calendars. When it comes to the proportionality of dial design and popularity of dial materials, here we have a more than noteworthy piece.
The Patek Philippe 3940 is by no means Patek’s only perpetual calendar complication, but it certainly was a bold release when Patek Philippe brought it to market alongside their 3970 in 1985, when most Swiss watch brands were disintegrating due to the quartz crisis, or revolution depending on how you see things. Patek Philippe decided to bring this reference to market in white, rose and yellow gold.
This particular model is the 3940R and would have been part of the 3rd series of the reference having been made in 2003. The dial is a bright white colour, made from porcelain and lacks applied indices and hour markers. Everything is painted including the bold roman numerals. The dial is incredibly clean and ergonomically spaced, and the 3940 is a real favourite among collectors for the information design of this perpetual calendar dial. Bevelled subdials for the month with leap-year and also the day with 24-hour display. The lower sub-register is an analogue date with moon-phase complication.
Hands are matt grey giving contrast to some of the reflective features below. Calendar setting buttons are in the case band at the 6 o’clock, 9 o’clock and either side of the 12 o’clock positions.
The watch contains the 27 Jewel cal. 240Q movement. The case measures 36mm and was the last perpetual calendar in a round case in this size.
The case back is a snap-on display and the watch comes on a Patek Philippe deployant pin clasp on a black crocodile leather strap.
The watch comes with full original paperwork and box.
