It is often commented that the Zenith El Primero is the best chronograph movement ever produced, and few will argue. Its durability and timekeeping are famously hard to beat in automatic chronographs, and it was indeed the first ever fully integrated, high-performance chronograph movement running at 36,600 VPH, released in 1969.
During the mid-late 1960s, there was a race for big brands to make the best chronograph movement. Some manufacturers even collaborated on movements such as Heuer/Leonidas and Hamilton/Büren and famously the Omega Speedmaster had been selected by Nasa only a few years earlier to be used in space shuttle missions by astronauts. All brands wanted to claim some notoriety in this area of apparent boom – high-performance steel chronograph watches.
This El Primero namesake model here is a good example of a gold dress model dating to 1969 and one of the first with the automatic 3019 chronograph movement installed. Many of these models were limited in their production to 600 pieces or 250 pieces however, this dial was a more common production model. This dial shows signs of restoration due to the unusual 1-10 numbering on the hour register for the chronograph in the lower subdial.
Zenith had a knack of making their dress watches utilitarian and modest in their appearance. This clean silver dial is perfectly offset with the red centre second chronograph counter and the black sub-dial hands. The hour markers are applied gold with a black feature.
The unusual position of the date window at 4 o’clock shows a black date on a white wheel. The watch comes on a brown leather strap and pin buckle in a Xupes presentation box.
