The Rolex GMT-Master 1675 had a 21-year production run between 1959 – 1980 and consequently there are many fine examples in circulation. Delving a bit deeper into its history however, there are a number of variants and attributes which make some 1675’s infinitely more desirable than others. This charismatic example fits well within that category. The watch was first purchased in June 1961 but thanks to the dating on the inside caseback, production can be dated to the first quarter of 1960. The red and blue of the iconic ‘Pepsi’ bezel show fading in equal measure and commensurate with the age of the watch, they sport the distinctive ‘fat font’ numerals.
Under the plexiglass crystal, the dial is in excellent order, with minimal signs of degradation to the surface despite its age. The four timing hands and the tritium hour markers share a wonderfully honest and even patina, highly sought after by vintage aficionados and a credible indication that this watch has not been altered during its journey.
The 40mm stainless steel case shows some minor pitting to the drilled lugs but is in good order, as is the solid caseback. The ‘twin lock’ waterproof screw-down crown is protected by pointed crown guards, which were only evident in the earliest examples of the reference and hold great value in the collector’s market.
Powering this GMT Master is an automatic 1565 movement beating at 18000 BPH (2.5 Hz). Rolex utilised their existing 1560 base caliber (hence the engraving shown on the automatic winding bridge) and upgraded it with the additional functionality of the date and GMT hand.
The bracelet is an original Jubilee with type 55 end links and deployant clasp. With years of repeated wear, some freedom is evident in the folded links, giving a comfortable slinky feel on the wrist.
Offered with Original box, manuals and guarantee this is a charming example of the reference and will delight those with a penchant for originality.
