"The Rolex Submariner evolved from the reference 1680 into the reference 16800 in 1978. The reference number only changed slightly with the single added zero. The changes to the design and build of the watch however were not so slight, and many new features remain in todays most modern Submariner. This introduction of staple features gained the 16800 the nickname of the transitional sub, from vintage to modern make-up.
The reference 16800 was the first Submariner with scratch resistant sapphire crystal rather than the old plexi-glass. The 16800 was also the first Rolex Submariner to contain the updated calibre 3035. This was a chronometer grade movement with an increased 50-hour power reserve and convenient quick-date set function.
This particular model 16800 is in overall good condition and dates to 1985 with a serial number 888****. There are some marks to the original bezel insert showing some natural wear and tear, as you’d expect of a 33 year old watch. Satisfyingly, the bezel insert has not been replaced as with so many models of this age. The dial has some light marks around 11 o'clock, but otherwise the dial and pinhole case are in good condition.
Up until 1985 and the year this watch was released, Rolex still used matt dials and with flat hour indices. This 1985 gloss maxi dial with applied our markers is one of the very first in it’s production with this dial. One of the main features that collectors like about this, is that the 16800 was the first watch to use a metal cup around the pearl in the bezel, so when these dials were released they were the first to have a matching bezel pearl cup with the applied hour marker rims - an attractive and subtle match.
This watch comes on a Rolex Oyster bracelet reference 78790 with 501B end links and Rolex presentation box."
