We are delighted to offer this superb Rolex GMT Master reference 1675 from 1963 representing some of the last in the series of the reference with the movement calibre 1560. This calibre was discontinued in these models to make way for the new calibre 1575 in 1964.

The calibre 1560 was a certified chronometer movement and the 1675 was the first GMT Master to imprint the words on the dial to signify this – Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified. The caseback reads the correct period the watch, being engraved as VI 63.

The black bezel variety was one of three options available at retail at the time. There was a choice of either this all-black bezel version, red and blue (“Pepsi”) or black and red (“Coke”). It is said that the black bezel was among the least chosen due to its overall similarity to the Submariner and its simplicity in comparison to the other more colourful statements. A distinctive feature of this black bezel version is the larger bezel numerals which sport attractive serifs on many of the numbers.

Its gilt gloss dial with the all-important Under Line signifying the change from Radium to safer Tritium for the markers and hands is in good condition, the hour plots are showing a nice consistency of colour and texture. The luminous Tritium material loses its effective glow after about 12 years.

Underline dials can most commonly be found on Rolex and Tudor timepieces (most prominently their sports models) that were produced between roughly late 1962 and early 1964. Due to the timing of their appearance and the very short period during which they were being fitted to watches, many collectors believe that underline dials received their small, horizontal markings as a way for Rolex to signify the transition from radium to tritium for the luminous material that was used for the hour markers.

This dial can be identified as a Type 2 Chapter Ring dial with its combination of even spacing of the underline between the SCOC writing and the hour marker, and the Swiss Only chapter ring design. Another distinguishing factor of all Chapter Ring dials is the hyphen between the “Oyster” and “Perpetual” in the upper writing.

The crown and case back show some wear marks, but the case is in overall good condition. The watch comes on a compatible vintage Stainless-steel bracelet and is showing only average wear and no significant scratches or marks.

The watch also comes with the Xupes presentation boxes.
