When Italo Fontana discovered 1942-dated chronograph designs his grandfather had drawn-up for the Italian navy, he was inspired to launch his own watchmaking company, which he aptly named “U-Boat”. The original watches were never made, but Fontana’s versions hit the shelves at the turn of the millennium. U-Boat watches are typically durable, oversized, retro-looking pieces with a predominantly masculine aesthetic. A trademark feature on all of the watches is a left-sided crown with a screw-down protector device. This has two unique advantages besides having an original image: crown winding is easier for left-handers, and, if worn on the left wrist, the crown does not dig into the back of the hand.
