An ancient Chinese bronze ceremonial ding, believed to date from the mid-late Shang Dynasty. The ding is of the typical shape of the Shang period with tripod feet and two facing handles. Derived from common ceramic shapes, bronzes of this type had become high-status items for ritual use and were often buried with their owners for use in the afterlife. It would have once had a lid but as with many surviving ding's of this period, this is missing. It has suffered general wear for an item of this age but the body still displays raised bands of bronze circling the body, intersected with intricate panels of thunder pattern, a low relief spiral motif. Provenance: This ding was acquired directly from a family in Berlin who first purchased the item in 1929. A copy of an original invoice dated 1929 has been kept along with a copy of an appraisal letter acquired by the family in 1994 confirming the authentication of the ding by Dr Jessica Rawson, Keeper, Department of Oriental Antiquities - The British Museum.
