We offer this scarce antique Victorian novelty reception bell cast in the form of a tortoise and believed to date from the late 19th century. This well and heavily made bell is modeled as a standing tortoise, the moulded shell forming the body of the bell with a clockwork wind up mechanism below. The bell is triggered by pressing the head and is stopped by lifting the tail. There is some silvering residue to one leg and the bell is not marked but offered in good working order. A similar example by J.B.Charrington is recorded in the Lyle Price Guide of Uncommon Antiques and Oddities (published 2000) and is recorded as having sold at Christies for £2,760.
