Product Details

  • We offer this rare, unusual and interesting Antique or Archaic Chinese set of twelve gilt metal zodiacal animal figures possibly Tang dynasty or earlier/later. This set of twelve figures with human bodies and animal heads are representative of the Chinese twelve-year cycle in which each year is associated with a specific animal. The figures depict the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. In Chinese they are called shengxiao. Each figure is very lightly cast with and well defined standing raised on a square base wearing a full length gown with their arms folded in front and each head depicting one of the zodiacal animals. There is wear and fatigue associated with age and we believe these may be period examples. Reference to a set of pottery figures of similar form is made in Gilded Dragons by Carol Michaelson Buried Treasures from China’s Golden Ages. The figures are not marked. Condition The set is offered in excellent presentable condition. All have surface wear and some rust build up under the bases and would certainly suggest possible burial
