We offer this exceptional and rare antique Chinese armorial lacquer games box including 93 gaming counters with armorial crests for Bell and dating from around 1840. The box of rectangular shape standing on a flat base and is exceptionally detailed with a detailed central scene from Chinese life surrounded by smaller vignettes illustrating various Chinese people and is an unusual decoration. The lid also bears the a central crest with a monogram for Bell and is marked IMB. Further scenes from Chinese life are applied around the edges of the games box. The decoration is gilded and coloured on a black ground. The games box is fitted with five lidded boxes each superbly decorated with detailed scenes and each bearing the Bell crest and monogram. Each box is also finely painted around the sides with gilded flowering sprigs. The games box also contains a set of ten gilded games trays for Pope Joan with painted detail based on early English playing cards. The box also comes complete with 93 original mother of pearl gaming counters. These comprise of 58 rectangular, 24 round and 11 of squarer shape. Each is finely carved with a reticulated with a central Eagle rising proper crest to one side and with initials IMB to the opposite side with figural scenes carved to either side. These alone are a valuable addition to such a wonderful item. The box is not marked however an extract from Fairnbairn's crests will be provided with the box.
