  • We offer this exceptional and rare antique Chinese armorial lacquer games box including 105 gaming counters with armorial crests for Bell of Scotland and dating from around 1830. The box of rectangular shape with angled corners stands raised on four lions paw feet and is exceptionally detailed with a detailed scene to the lid possibly the emperor in attendance with numerous figures and various buildings and surrounded with writhing dragons. The lid also bears the crest, monogram and motto for Bell and is marked JB with the motto CONFIDO (I trust). Further scenes from Chinese life are applied around the edges with vignettes around the lower section of the box. The decoration is heavily gilded with spot colouring on a black ground. The games box is fitted with seven covered boxes all equally superbly gilded with scenes and the set comes complete with twelve matching trays each bearing the Bell crest, motto and monogram. The box also comes complete with 105 original mother of pearl gaming counters. These comprise of 63 rectangular, 30 round and 12 of squarer shape. Each is deeply and finely carved with the matching Bell crest, monogram and motto set within a scene with a further figural scene from Chinese life carved to the back. These alone are a valuable addition to such a wonderful item. The box is not marked however an extract from Fairnbairn's crests will be provided with the box.
