  • Condition The lidded Koro is offered in good overall condition without restoration but with some minor losses and damages. There is loss to some of the pointed elements around the head of the dragon, the figure on the cover has had his arm and head reattached with some consequential loss and there is also a small surface chip to the edge of the top opening. None of these detract greatly and this is a very rare and stunning example and a wonderful addition to any serious collection. They don't come much better than this and this could be easily restored!   View More Details

Product Details

  • We offer this incredible and rare antique Japanese Satsuma Koro and cover lavishly painted with a battle scene with a meeting of elders on the opposite side, possibly debating the battle and negotiating peace. The vase is exquisitely painted with incredible detail and has painted gold marks to the base similar to an example we have seen by Kinkoku and Sane Yoshi and certainly very similar in style dating from the Meiji period and around 1890. The earthenware Koro is of rounded shape standing on a rounded pedestal base supported on three mask feet and with a narrow stem with a dragon modeled in relief and wrapped around the stem. The body of the koro is hand painted with two detailed panels, one with a battle scene in full flow with Samurai on foot and horseback wielding swords and other weapons. The opposite side is painted with ten figures alongside a lake in negotiation and debate. A recessed cover sits on top with cut out holes and with a seated figure mounted on top. The quality of the work is exceptional and and the decoration incorporates Satsuma marks. The base has an ornately drawn gilded makers mark and this is simply a stunning and rare piece!
