  • We offer this rare and unusual antique Portuguese majolica plate made by Manuel Cipriano Gomez (1830-1905) heavily decorated with fish, eels and shell fish dating from the 19th century. Inspired by the earlier designs of French potter Bernard Palissy (1510-1590) this rare and heavily potted earthenware plate is of large rounded size standing on a narrow rounded foot and applied with five fish of varying size and shape along with an eel and three shells. These are applied on a course chip ground imitating sea weed and is painted in tones of blue, brown and green. The base of the plate has a mottled brown finish with an impressed M MAFRA CALDAS makers mark and has an attached metal hanging loop inserted into two small holes in the foot rim.
