  • Xupes Reference MIFM01203
  • Age Early 19th century
  • Condition The overall condition is excellent with the following defects noted. Five of the containers have drying splits with only one shaker having a more serious split to the lid. There is very minor loss to the rims of both baskets with one of the spill holders having loss to a section of the castellated rim. There are probably only two pieces where the loss is slightly more significant and certainly none of this detracts. A rare collection and a unique opportunity to acquire this.  View More Details

Product Details

  • Some years ago we acquired this rare private collection of 31 carved containers made from coquilla nuts and dating from the early 19th century. The collection comprises of fourteen shakers each with a screw down lid and elaborately carved bodies. Seven egg shaped flea traps with pierced and elaborately carved designs. Matched pair of squat shakers on pedestal feet possibly a cruet set. A pair of handled baskets with castellated rims and pierced and elaborately carved designs. A carved and hollowed out egg, probably a thimble holder and a similar shaped container with screw lid and sitting upright. An acorn shaped pocket nutmeg grater with fitted removable ivory mounted grate. An egg shaped lidded nutmeg shaker on a pedestal foot. A couple of spill holders with castellated rims. This is an interesting and unusual collection which was amassed over a period of 25 years with many of these pieces becoming increasingly hard to find.
