Product Details

  • We offer this rare and exceptional antique Chinese pottery rank badge modeled in fine detail with a lion dog holding a sword dating from around 1900 or possibly earlier. The octagonal badge has an angled and slightly raised base moulded in relief centrally with the head of a lion dog holding a sword in its mouth. The head sits with a moulded turquoise painted surround against a yellow ground and is not only finely detailed but also finely hand painted in coloured enamels. The badge has two cord holes both to the top and bottom edges and has a series of four impressed makers and seal marks to the base each hand coloured against a turquoise ground. It has been suggested that this may indeed be an imperial piece with the lion dog and sword being emblematic of the high status of the intended recipient. Regardless of purpose a rare and stunning item.
